Expressive product design
This project is an experiment about form that doesn’t follow the content, about the visual research that liberates itself from functionality.
I designed a dustpan and brush set that embodies the expression
“FRAGILE”.
Throughout the process I tried to interpret fragility in many different aspects of the project.
The brush body is split in two pieces:
Top part has bubble form with a narrow ending 0.1 inch bigger than the diameter of the dustpan’s handle.
The ending and the bubble shape of the brush will direct dustpan’s handle throughout the process of fitting.
The sound of glass going through ceramic evokes fracture each time their edges touch.
The folded form of the dustpan evokes fracture:
It resembles a very crisp layer of material prone to breaking with minimum vertical force.
Brush has two different kinds of bristles with different density and colors:
The inner bristles are extremely fine and have been arrayed along a circle. Their presence evokes fragility of the dustpan’s long and brittle handle.
The outer bristles are more dense and longer. They are made out of mustela sibirica hair, which is the finest brush hair.
Ironically the brush dusts the dirt or trash but this brush is fine and delicate and needs to be treated with care.
