Conceptual furniture design and production processes (In Progress)
Full seat, veneer laminated and stained.
In this project, I designed a 20 inches high stool inspired by the energy and visual elements of volcanoes. Through many phases of the design development I was able to gain an in-depth understanding of the technical aspects of furniture making such as ergonomics, joinery and manufacturing processes. The stool consists of three parts:
A: Stained ash wood
Vacuum formed and stained with ultra penetrating Mohawk matte black.
B: Pressure bent cold roll steel tube
Radius is within the minimum bend radius to maximize the weight support.
C: Casted aluminum bracket
The form of the wooden element resembles the flow of lava downwards towards the ground from the crater, the choice of wood lamination coincides with the layer by layer lava formations, the slit in the middle of the seat provides a cross section view inside of a volcano showing the path through which lava moves towards the cone and lastly, the bent metal tube represents the molten lava inside of the Earth in a vertical erupting movement.

Initial sketches and models.
Proof of Concept: 1/2 seat vacuum formed veneer
Custom bracket is casted aluminum and will be welded to the metal tube. The bracket is designed based on the form of Stromboli valcano in Sicily, Italy. The bracket allows a gap between the wooden part of the stool and the tube.
